Fire officials from 3 states are joining forces to draw attention to an increasing number of fatal house fires in the tri-state. Department Chiefs and State Fire Marshal’s from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky held a news conference Tuesday at Cincinnati State to talk about safety tips during the holidays. Cincinnati Chief Robert Wright says many families only half heartedly prepare fire safety plans. Wright says fire knows no age, class, race or gender. But he says it does have a harsher effect on the young, old and the poor. Indiana Fire Marshal James Greeson says people need to be especially careful with live christmas trees, candles and lights. Greeson says you should think safety with holiday cooking. He says that's especially true when deep frying turkeys. Officials say you should be careful with fireplaces and make sure there are protective screens in front of them and ashes are disposed of only after they are allowed to cool. They also say space heaters should not be used with extension cords and should be turned off when you leave the home or go to bed.
