The streetcar issue is another step closer to being on November’s ballot. Backers of the proposed Charter amendment, including the Cincinnati NAACP and Citizens Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes, say they will announce this afternoon they have enough signatures--6,150--to put it before Cincinnati voters. But COAST’s Jason Gloyd says the coalition opposing streetcars will continue gathering signatures as a safeguard in case there’s a challenge. The Hamilton County Board of Elections has to verify the signatures before the proposal makes the ballot. Streetcar opponents say at a time when the city is cutting its budget, it can’t afford a 185-million-dollar streetcar system. Cincinnatians for Progress opposes the issue. The group says it’s too broad since it would require voters to approve spending on any passenger rail project. It says that could jeopardize other rail proposals, such as the plan to connect Cincinnati with Chicago and Cleveland via high speed rail.
