Cuts in State funding put local library further in the red
By Ann Thompson
7/20/2009 3:52:15 PM

Passage of Ohio’s new budget means fewer dollars funneled to local libraries. The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County will get 2-million dollars less this year, and Executive Director Kim Fender says this is in addition to previous budget problems. She says to get by this year, the library will cancel a maintenance project. With that all branches will be able to remain open at regular staffing levels. Fender says if the one-mill levy doesn’t pass this fall, 2010 is the year that really becomes questionable. She says without it there will be a 16-million dollar deficit next year, meaning some libraries will close, and staff will be cut.
