Cincinnati City Council voted Thursday afternoon to set the city’s property tax rate for next year at 4.46 mills. That means residents won’t see an increase to the city portion of their taxes and the city won’t collect any additional tax revenue. That’s the same rate Council thought it would be able to tweak when it was tentatively set in June. However, it turns out that rate was binding, though Council could have filed an appeal to increase it with the Hamilton County Budget Commission. Councilman Greg Harris called it a shame that the tax rate could not be set when the council had a better idea of what the next year’s budget will look like, especially considering that the city is facing a $51.5 million deficit. As late as Thursday morning council members had deadlocked on the tax rate issue. Council had until Monday, November 16th to make a final decision or the rate would have reverted to zero and resulted in a loss of 60 million dollars in tax revenue.
