Cincinnati Council asks questions about grant for firefighters
By Jay Hanselman
2/8/2010 3:50:33 PM

There’s much confusion about a nearly $7 million federal grant Cincinnati is applying for to hire 40 new firefighters. Much of it stems about whether the city would have to increase its complement of firefighters from the current 842 to 882. There’s confusion if the city has to maintain the higher number if firefighters retire or quit. It could also prevent the city from making layoffs in the department. Officials say the federal government may waive that requirement, but that’s uncertain. Council Member Charlie Winburn says he pro-firefighters, but he needs additional information. Council will have the final say on whether the federal grant is accepted. That announcement could come in July or September.
