After residents in Colerain Township complained about smells last night and this morning around the Rumpke sanitary landfill, local and state agencies are monitoring the situation. A release from the Hamilton County Health Department, Rumpke and Hamilton County Environmental Services says methane gas is collected from the decomposing waste at the landfill and there's been a reaction occurring in some of the gas recovery wells because of elevated temperatures, which is causing additional odors. The release says sampling of areas surrounding the landfill do not indicate an air pollution level that would pose short or long term health effects. Health Commissioner Tim Ingram says in the release the odor level is offensive and his office is working with Rumpke to improve the situation. Rumpke Vice President Jeff Rumpke says the company apologizes for any impacts of the currrent situation. You can report odors 24 hours a day at the following numbers: 946-7879 (business hours) and 946-7777 (weekends and evenings).
