Turfway's Spiral Stakes purse increases

Went the Day Well racing in the 2012 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park.

Turfway Park and Cincinnati's Horseshoe Casino are partnering in an attempt to boost attendance and attract big name race horses to its premier event.

Turfway Marketing Director Jack Gordon says the casino is investing more than $150,000 to bring the Spiral Stakes purse to $550,000.

"When that purse structure goes up at your property, bigger horses - it really gains more popularity out there in the horse industry - go to those races that have the bigger purses," says Gordon.

Elections board questions "double-voters"

The Hamilton County Board of Elections heard sworn testimony Friday afternoon from five of 18 voters who cast two ballots in the November election as part of an investigation that could lead to criminal charges.

Almost all of the voters being investigated cast absentee ballots and then showed up at their polling places on election day and were given provisional ballots by poll workers - which they were required to do.

Kentucky lawmakers consider Instant Racing to pay for pensions

Kentucky House leaders are considering legalizing Instant Racing across Kentucky to help plug the funding gap in the state's pensions.

Instant Racing is a slots-like game currently played at two Kentucky tracks, Ellis Park and Kentucky Downs. The legality of the game is also currently being litigated at the Kentucky Supreme Court.

But if the General Assembly passes a bill authorizing it, the court case would be moot.

Deal proposed to save Melrose YMCA in Walnut Hills

Walnut Hills residents who want to keep a YMCA facility open in their neighborhood have until today to respond to a deal that will do that. 


A couple Cincinnati Council Members worked on the agreement with YMCA officials. 


Wendell Young said it keeps the Melrose Y open for two more years with additional hours and funding. 


In 2015, the community can take over the facility if it doesn't like the Y's plan for it.

Bill blocking groceries from selling wine and liquor advances to Kentucky House

Rep. Dennis Keene sponsored House Bill 310

A bill that would effectively block grocery stores from selling wine and liquor—and ban wine and liquor sales in new pharmacies—was approved Thursday in a state House committee.

Under the legislation, grocery stores could still sell alcohol from an adjoined structure with a separate entrance. 

Current law does not allow people younger than 21 to enter a place which sells wine and package liquor, which has prevented sales in grocery stores in the past.
