After 100 Years In Existence, What Is The Current State Of The Army ROTC On College Campuses

Founded in 1916, ROTC, the Reserve Officer Training Corps, was designed to prepare young adults to become officers in the U.S. Military. In exchange for a paid college education and a guaranteed post-college career, cadets commit to serve in the military after graduation.

ROTC programs fell into disfavor on many campuses during the 1960's and the Vietnam Era, but today they are offered at more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the country.

Joining us for a look at ROTC today are Professor of Military Science for the ROTC All for One Battalion and Xavier University Military Science Department Chair Major Nathan Lewis; All For One Battalion Commander Edward Hoffmann; and Battalion Command Sergeant Major Tia Bomske.

There are two local ROTC Battalions, one at the University of Cincinnati and one at Xavier University. The Xavier ROTC program consists of cadets from five local colleges: Xavier, NKU, Thomas More, Miami and Mount St. Joseph.
