Cincinnati Council is joining the list of groups asking for a retrial of former University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing on murder and voluntary manslaughter charges for killing Sam DuBose during a 2015 traffic stop.
A jury last weekend could not reach a verdict on those charges.
Council unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday calling for a retrial.
"This is an important case for our community and I think because of it a retrial is warranted," said Council Member Yvette Simpson. "I am asking council approval on a resolution directing or encouraging, or in my words urging, Prosecutor Deters' to retry this case."
Council Member Wendell Young was a co-sponsor on Simpson's resolution.
"There must be justice, there must be a decision," Young said. "We cannot allow this matter to just languish. It’s not good for the justice system. It isn’t good for our city. It isn't good for either family."
Council Member Kevin Flynn said he had some early concerns about telling the county prosecutor what to do.
"But when I re-read the resolution, I came to the conclusion that I can support it because it really is expressing our collective belief that he should be retried and that we're not trying to usurp any authority of the prosecutor," Flynn said.
Earlier this week some faith leaders from around Cincinnati asked for a quick decision on a possible retrial.
Prosecutor Joe Deters has said he hopes to make a decision by November 28.
