Cincinnati's Charter review work continues

Cincinnati's Charter Review task force is continuing its work.

Task force Co-chairman Mike Morgan presented an update Tuesday to Council's Rules and Audit Committee.

Morgan said various subcommittees have been reviewing items since last summer.  He said the full task force will meet Monday.

“It’s then going to adopt a schedule that’s going to be roughly every two weeks, we’ll go through each one of these reports, these initial findings from these committees,” Morgan said.  “Then after that we’re going to have a series of public forums and we’re going to start taking these initial findings and ideas around.”

The goal could be to have some Charter revisions on the ballot this November for city residents to consider.

Council Member Kevin Flynn asked for the charter review soon after taking office.

“Some of the recommendations will be we don’t need to make changes to our charter, our charter is good as it stands,” Flynn said.  “Some of the recommendations may be we need to change, and then there will be a minority report, if you will, that will say this is a different way that some members feel that it should change.”

Some of the big items that could be discussed include changing the city's structure to have an executive mayor form of government.  That would make the mayor the city's chief executive officer.  Right now that title belongs to the city manager.

There could also be changes to how the city's nine council members are elected.
