Covington Board of Commissioners appoints David Johnston as Covington's next city manager.

A four month search for a new Covington City Manager has come to a close. The Covington Board of Commissioners on Tuesday voted to appoint David Johnston as Covington's next city manager.Johnston has worked as a government manager for 20 years. He served as city manager for the City of Maple Valley, Washington; village administrator for Rantoul, Illinois and Coal City, Illinois; and was town manager of Westfield, Indiana.

"We were very impressed not only with Johnston's level of professionalism and extensive background, but his positive approach to problem solving," says Interim City Manager Loren Wolff in a release. "He will be a great asset to Covington, bringing a fresh perspective to the table."

"David Johnston is well qualified and experienced." adds Covington Mayor Joseph U. Meyer. "We believe he'll bring the right attitude and leadership skills to direct Covington's revitalization."

Johnston has a Masters of Public Affairs from Indiana University, a Bachelors of Arts in American Studies from the University of Notre Dame and a Certificate in Economic Development from the University of Oklahoma.

Johnston's salary will be $140,000 annually. He begins his role as city manager no later than August 21.

Former City Manager Larry Klein resigned from the position in February and Covington attorney Loren Wolff was named Interim City Manager.

The search for a new city manager began in March when Covington contracted with Municipal Solutions, LLC to launch an international search to recruit qualified candidates. The city wanted applicants with the right qualifications, were a good fit, and would be committed.

A total of 37 people from 16 states applied for the position and several international applications were filed from Kenya and Japan. The four finalists met with citizens, community leaders, city staff members and the City Commission.
