Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune believes there could be federal money coming for the replacement of the Brent Spence Bridge.
Ohio and Kentucky have been looking for funding without counting on federal assistance. But Portune says right now both the House and the Senate are working on a multi-year transportation bill that could help.
“The details are under wraps. They are being presented and marked up by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee this week,” Portune says.
“It is believed though that there will be a program in it for projects of national and regional significance," Portune says. "And a list of projects that would qualify for that funding will be presented and it is understood that the Brent Spence Bridge is going to be on that list.”
Portune says the federal dollars wouldn't cover the entire cost of the estimated $2.6 billion project.
“All of the discussion up until now has been no federal funding,” he says. “The reality is that this bill, details of which will we learn by the end of the week, will have a program for projects like the Brent Spence Bridge.”
He says details about the bill should come out on Thursday.
