July 26, 1954: WCET-TV debuts as the city’s first non-commercial TV station – and first UHF station -- 61 years ago.
Channel 48 broadcast of “Tel-a-Story” from its studio in Music Hall could be seen here on only 500 television sets able to receive ultra-high frequency (UHF) channels 14 through 83.
By October 1954, the station increased to 40 hours of broadcasting a week – 26 hours live, four hours filmed and 10 hours of a test pattern.
The station’s historic FCC non-commercial education television license No. 1 wasn’t issued until March 11, 1955.
