Mason's Shalom Center Works To Protect Senior Citizens Suffering Abuse

Some estimates say the number of elder abuse victims in the U.S. could be as high as 5 million per year.

The National Council on Aging estimates that one in every 10 Americans, aged 60 or older, has been the victim of some type of abuse or neglect. But elder abuse is a hidden crime that often goes unreported. It’s estimated that authorities are notified of only one in 14 cases.

In the Cincinnati area, the Shalom Center for Elder Abuse Prevention provides a shelter for seniors who’ve been victimized. It’s the only program of its kind in our region and one of only 13 in the nation. Cedar Village in Mason founded the Center five years ago and operates it at an undisclosed location.

Joining us to discuss elder abuse and the work of the Shalom Center are President and CEO of Cedar Village Dan Fagin and Cedar Village Admissions Director Gail Davis.

The City of Mason and Cedar Village Foundation are partnering for the 3rd annual Shalom Sprint 5K Run/Walk, April 2, at Corwin Nixon Park in Mason. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. Proceeds will go directly to support the Shalom Center. Click here for more information.
