The National Council on Aging estimates that one in every 10 Americans, aged 60 or older, has been the victim of some type of abuse or neglect. But elder abuse is a hidden crime that often goes unreported. It’s estimated that authorities are notified of only one in 14 cases.
In the Cincinnati area, the Shalom Center for Elder Abuse Prevention provides a shelter for seniors who’ve been victimized. It’s the only program of its kind in our region and one of only 13 in the nation. Cedar Village in Mason founded the Center five years ago and operates it at an undisclosed location.
