More than 70 Fulbright scholars from Afghanistan are in Oxford to learn and develop business solutions. The goal is create social change when they return home.
The program is a partnership between the U.S. State Department and Miami's Farmer School of Business. Social Entrepreneurship Center Director Brett Smith says the students learn market-driven solutions to address social and economic issues.
“Why is this cool? It allows us to leverage the power of capitalism, the power of entrepreneurship, of innovation. And to use it to tackle real social problems; to actually allow the people of Afghanistan put the tools in their hand so they can rebuild their own home country. And it has unlimited potential,” he says.
Smith says the university stays in contact with participants once they leave to track their progress and help them be successful. The five day program begins Wednesday.
