The Miami University Marching Band was in the first wave of invitees to participate in the 57th Inaugural Parade on Monday, Jan. 21 in Washington, D.C.
So far, the Miami University band is the only participant from Ohio invited by the Presidential Inaugural Committee.
"We are honored and most proud of our marching band for receiving an invitation, and we gladly accept,'' said James Lentini, dean of Miami's School of Creative Arts. "It says a lot about the quality of our students and programs in music and the arts here at Miami and grows our reputation as a top destination for studying the arts."
Miami athletic band director Stephen Lytle and band members submitted an application to participate in the Inaugural Parade. More than 2,800 organizations applied. The first group of invitees was announced Wednesday.
In past years, the Miami University Marching Band has been in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
In January, they will participate in the parade that takes place after the swearing-in of President Obama and Vice President Biden. The parade runs down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House.
