A mixed-use "town center" style development is on its way to the Northern Kentucky University campus. The school says St. Elizabeth will occupy a 70,000 square foot professional building at U.S. 27 and Nunn Drive. The development will also include restaurants, retail space, apartments and a hotel.
"The goal is to create a fresh new entry to campus that best addresses our students' desire for walkable amenities, while at the same time enhancing our Highland Heights community," NKU says in a release.
The total estimated cost of the complex, which will be competed in phases, is up to $100 million.
A ground breaking is set for mid-2018.
The medical building will offer an urgent care, primary care and specialty physicians, though full details haven't been finalized. An orthopedic group also plans to lease a portion of the space.
"As northern Kentucky continues to grow in both residential and student population, the need for additional health services will grow along with it," says St. Elizabeth Healthcare President and CEO Garren Colvin. "This exciting development is just one more step in St. Elizabeth’s partnership with NKU to make northern Kentucky one of the healthiest communities in the country."
For its part, NKU says the development connects the campus more with the Highland Heights community.
"This development will energize the entrance to the university and transform it into a regional gathering place for both the campus and the community. We want this town center to serve as a bridge with Highland Heights by creating a walkable retail and commercial center that everyone can enjoy," says Interim President Gerry St. Amand. "The town center project will make NKU more welcoming and appealing to future students. It's also an important step toward integrating our campus more fully into the life of the city NKU calls home – Highland Heights."
