Officers Shoot, Kill 'Knife-Wielding' Suspect

Cincinnati Police say officers shot and killed a knife-wielding man on Government Square Sunday morning.

Lieutenant Gary Brown says officers were first called to the Kroger store at 1420 Vine Street in Over-the-Rhine for a report of an attempted shoplifting. He says the suspect was confronted by security.

"And the suspect pulled a knife and actually held it to the security officer's throat," Brown says.

Brown says the man ran out of the store and was seen running south on Vine. He says officers were checking bus stops in the area and found a suspect who matched the description at Government Square.

"As they got out of their vehicle to confront him, and to see if he was the right suspect, the suspect pulled a knife on the officers," Brown says. " As the suspect approached the officers, the officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect."

The man was pronounced dead on the scene. Brown was not sure how many shots were fired or how many times the suspect was hit.

The name of the suspect and the identities of the officers have not been released.
