Redistricting In Ohio: A History

ohio gerrymandering

If passed, Ohio Issue 1 on the primary ballot will change the way congressional districts are drawn.

In Ohio, as in most states, the legislature has the power to create congressional voting district maps, which usually means the party in power makes the decisions. This frequently results in districts being drawn in favor of that party, often all but guaranteeing its candidates win in future elections.

On Tuesday, Ohioans will be able to vote on Issue 1, which, if it passes, will change how voting districts are created in the state. Ohio lawmakers came up with the new, bipartisan way to draw the lines for congressional districts, in hopes of making for more fair elections.

Joining "Cincinnati Edition" to discuss Ohio Issue 1 and the history of redistricting in the state are Ohio Public Radio and Television Statehouse News Bureau reporter and producer Andy Chow (@andy_chow); Cincinnati Enquirer Columbus Bureau Chief Chrissie Thompson (@cthompsonENQ); and WVXU politics reporter Howard Wilkinson (@howardwilkinson).
