Snow gets deeper as you head south

**Updated 4:37pm**

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has declared a statewide emergency, which frees up state resources, including the National Guard, to aid local jurisdictions.

So far, Kentucky Emergency Management reports the snow has been "dry",  and has not accumulated on trees and power lines, which means limited impact on the state's energy grid.

Some parts of the Bluegrass State could receive up to 16 inches by the time the snow ends tonight.

Cincinnati snow crews are on 12 hour shifts.  City Manager Harry Black says people should stay off the roads tonight, and if possible, avoid driving tomorrow.  For drivers who do get in an accident, Cincinnati Police say if no-one is hurt and the vehicles are still drivable, report the accident later.

**Original Story**

By the time it's all said and done (5am Tuesday) National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters predict the areas north of Cincinnati and into Butler County will escape with the least amount of snow and areas to the south could get as much as 10 inches of snow.

On Monday afternoon NWS Meteorologist Asley Novak told WVXU:

  • Butler County could expect 2 to 4 inches by Tuesday morning
  • Hamilton County 4 to 7 inches
  • Northern Kentucky 8 to 10 inches

Ohio and Kentucky highway departments are trying to remain on top of the snow storm. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet sent this information:

Crews report that the snow is mostly a dry powder, easily plowed but coming down in such volume that plowed driving lanes quickly become covered again. Crews in many areas are concentrating on plowing instead of salting. Pavement temperatures typically are below the point at which salt is effective. And with the necessity of repeated plowing, salt would be scraped away, in any event.

By mid-afternoon, Boone and Kenton Counties in Kentucky had issued Level 2 Snow Emergencies, which means people should only travel if necessary.
