Social Enterprises Starting To Grow In Russia

Impact Hub in Moscow
Impact Hub in Moscow is working to increase the use of the social enterprise model in Russia.

Social enterprises utilize a combination of for-profit and non-profit-based methods for improving society. Rather than depend on charitable donations, they rely on the income earned from sales or services. And they reinvest income to maintain long-term financial sustainability. This model has become popular in several cities throughout the United States, including here in Greater Cincinnati.

But can social entrepreneurs and social enterprises be successful in Russia?

Yana Osipenko, managing director of the Social Impact Award in Russia, works with the social enterprise Impact Hub in Moscow. She is currently in the U.S. doing a fellowship with Flywheel Cincinnati to share ideas on supporting and promoting social entrepreneurs.

This afternoon, Yana Osipenko and Flywheel Executive Director Bill Tucker join "Cincinnati Edition" to discuss the benefits of social enterprises.

Flywheel, the Greater Cincinnati World Affairs Council and the Greater Cincinnati Social Enterprise Alliance will present "People to People: From Russia with…Yana Osipenko" this Thursday, May 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Graydon on Main, 1421 Main Street in Over-the-Rhine.

Tune in to "Cincinnati Edition" May 8 starting at 1 p.m. to hear this segment.
