Tensing Retrial Will Have New Judge

Pool
Ray Tensing enters court on Nov. 28, 2016.

Update 11/29/16: The case has been reassigned to Judge Leslie Ghiz. Judge Tom Heekin recused himself Tuesday morning. The case was then randomly assigned to Judge Beth Myers who also recused herself. She is slated to move to the appellate court in February 2017.

Original Post 11/28/16: Former UC police officer Ray Tensing made his final appearance in Judge Megan Shanahan's courtroom this morning. After ruling on a few remaining issues, Judge Shanahan recused herself from the forthcoming retrial of Tensing for murder and voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Sam DuBose.

Shanahan denied an acquittal request by the defense and says the retrial should have a blank slate.

The new trial has been assigned to Judge Tom Heekin. However, court records show he was involved in a settlement between UC and the DuBose family. Heekin's bailiff says the judge hasn't yet said if he'll keep the case or recuse himself and have the case reassigned.

Shanahan also defended her ruling during the trial to keep jurors' names private, overruling objections by attorneys for local media outlets who argued the information should be public.
