In Vintage "Base Ball," The Gloves Come Off

This holiday weekend, dozens of base ball teams take the field with wooden bats. They'll keep score on the board with chalk. They'll likely get grass stains on their cotton uniforms and hopefully there won't be any broken fingers when they play without gloves.

The annual Ohio Cup Vintage Base Ball Festival in Columbus this September 1 and 2 attracts teams from all over the Tri-State who play by 19th century rules (including using the 19th century spelling of "base ball" instead of "baseball"). Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss vintage base ball are Cincinnati Vintage Base Ball Club Treasurer Larry Phillips; Moscow Monarchs President Jim Willison; and Cincinnati Reds Team Historian Greg Rhodes.

The season is not over. You can find a complete schedule for the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, the Cincinnati Buckeyes and the Moscow Monarchs online.

Tune in to Cincinnati Edition August 29 starting at 1 p.m. to hear this segment.
