In celebration of the 40th anniversary of 91.7 WVXU, and in recognition of a turning point in American history, WVXU and 88.5 WMUB will honor D-Day with a five-hour tribute culled from the Peabody Award winning documentary, D-Day + 50 Years originally aired by WVXU in 1995.
Lee Hay has assembled this special from the original 12-hour broadcast produced by George Zahn and Mark Magistrelli and featuring original host Mike Whorf.

The first hour will feature breaking news reports on NBC and the BBC about the invasion by Allied troops. There’s music by Harry James, a statement by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, “V for Victory” Morse code signal, and eyewitness reports by war correspondents in the field.

The third hour spotlights news bulletins from CBS, NBC, and the BBC. An eyewitness report from the beaches is interrupted by a BBC feed to WLW. There’s a reading of a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay, and regional reports of reactions from stations around the country including Arthur Riley at WLW. He’s reports that churches and synagogues were busy, folks were donating blood, and there was a work stoppage in the central plant of the Wright Aeronautical Plant in Lockland making engines for war planes.
