WMUB’s beloved Mama Jazz, aka Phyllis Campbell, died on November 27, 2011 at the age of 89.
For nearly 30 years, jazz fans tuned in to hear her laid-back approach to jazz and her unique delivery. At the height of its popularity, the Mama Jazz show was four hours long and ran live five nights a week.
“Mama Jazz is definitely a jazz legend in her own right. Her listeners absolutely loved her as did so many of the jazz musicians whom she played on her show and met when she went to their concerts,” says WVXU host Lee Hay, who worked with Mama Jazz at WMUB.
On Sunday, February 5 at 8:00 p.m., 91.7 WVXU and 88.5 WMUB are happy to remember Mama Jazz by presenting a program that was originally broadcast on WMUB in August 2002. Included will be recordings by Duke Ellington, Mel Torme, and David “Fathead” Newman.
