Eliminating food deserts in Cincinnati

A recent report suggests Cincinnati set-up a $15 million fund to attract grocery stores to city neighborhoods that are currently described as food deserts.  These are geographic areas with low access to affordable, healthy food.

A study finds there are 24 supermarkets in the Cincinnati metropolitan area, putting the region below the national average by about 10 stores.

Cincinnati Council to consider zone change for project near XU

Cincinnati Council will likely approve a zoning change Wednesday needed for a mixed use development near the Xavier University campus. 

The 20-acre site is located at the corner of Dana Avenue and Montgomery Road in Evanston. 

Liz Blume is the Executive Director of the Community Building Institute, which is a partnership involving Xavier. 

She said the development will include apartment housing for students plus retail and office space.

Garbage collection

Cincinnati could change garbage collection

Cincinnati Council could be asked later this year to change the way the city collects trash in order to save money. 

Officials essentially want to use more automated equipment and reduce the amount of manual labor needed to pick up garbage. 

City Manager Milton Dohoney, Jr. has been requesting such a change in several of his recent budget proposals. 

A task force has been studying the issue for a couple years.
