As America continues to wrestle with its racial divides, universities are pressed more than ever to increase diversity and cultural competency among students, faculty and staff.
That's true at local institutions like Miami University, where about 15% of undergraduate and graduate students are people of color. The school recently hired Dr. Cristina Alcalde as its new vice president of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion. Alcalde is an experienced gender and women's studies researcher whose work has explored race, migration and gender violence.
Alcalde joins Cincinnati Edition to talk about her goals and the challenges and opportunities she sees in her new role, which starts July 1.
Listen to Cincinnati Edition live at noon M-F. Audio for this segment will be uploaded after 4 p.m. ET.
