Fired assistant principal runs for Cincinnati council

Mike Moroski, the former assistant principal at Purcell Marian High School who was fired this month for saying gays should be allowed to marry, announced his candidacy for Cincinnati City Council on his personal website Wednesday.

Moroski told WVXU this morning that he had originally planned to run in 2017, but his firing from Purcell Marian by the Archodiocese of Cincinnati on Feb. 9 for writing that "gay people SHOULD be allowed to marry" on his blog, hastened his time table.

"This is something I have wanted to do for a long time,'' said Moroski, a downtown resident. "I talked with my wife a lot about it. We have the organization; we have the supporters; we can raise the money, so why not now?"

The firing this month, Moroski said, "was not the path we chose, but it was the path that was thrust upon us. I have decided that now is the time to run, because I believe I have a lot to offer this community."

Moroski said the outpouring of public support after his firing "was overwhelming."

"My phone actually had an internal meltdown, I was getting so many phone calls from friends and supporters,'' Moroski said.

Moroski said he will seek the Democratic Party's endorsement in the race, but will run with or without a party endorsement.

Moroski had worked to elect Laure Quinlivan to council and said that she has encouraged him to run, as has his friend, council member Yvette Simpson.

The official campaign kickoff for Moroski will be at 6 p.m. on March 20 at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse.
