County approves effort to reduce infant death rate

Hamilton County health and government agencies are working together to fight high infant mortality rates.

The county's infant death rate exceeds the national average and has for a decade.

Commissioners Wednesday approved a county-wide collaborative that aims to reduce infant death rates.

Commissioner Todd Portune says the multi-agency approach is needed to tackle such a big issue.

"Our community, despite our wealth of healthcare resources - having one of the best children's hospital medical centers in the world in our own backyard - we continue to be plagued by an inordinately high rate at which babies die before their first birthday," he says.

The "Hamilton County County-wide Collaborative on Infant Mortality Rate Reduction" pulls together county and city agencies as well as local hospitals and healthcare providers.

Funding comes, in part, from the sale of Drake Hospital to UC Health.
