La Salle shooting victim moved to rehab

Ann Thompson, WVXU News

The La Salle student who shot himself at school last month is being moved from the UC Medical Center to  a rehab facility.

For weeks the honors student was in critical condition after shooting himself in class. His family released this statement Thursday:

“Dear Friends, this has truly been an emotional time for our family as you might imagine. Our faith has helped us tremendously along with the knowledge that so many people who did not even know our son or family, were keeping us in their thoughts and prayers. You’re continued prayers help us remain strong. Our son began the next segment of his journey. He has been transferred to another facility to assist with mobility and strength. It was hard to say goodbye to the staff at UC Medical Center. What they’ve done here is phenomenal and we know this was the right place for him to be however, we must now take the next steps along with our son. We love him dearly and will be by his side wherever the road leads, no matter how long the journey. We thank the media for your continued efforts to allow us our privacy as we support our son through this new and extended recovery. We will continue to provide updates when our emotions permit.”

How to donate to the family:

Fifth Third Bank says earlier problems have been fixed and the fund is set up as a "Benefit" savings account under Poynter Family Fund Checks can also be made out to the “Poynter Family Fund” and mailed to: Poynter Fund, 615 Springfield Pike, Unit 1, Cincinnati, OH 45215

La Salle resilience

On the day of the shooting,  WVXU reported Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Dr. Jim Rigg said, "LaSalle is a tremendous school. It's a strong school. It's unfortunately a school that has faced certain tragedies before, but it's a school that always impresses me with it's faith and strength and I know that the students will rally together with the community to move forward."

This shooting was the second of two violent incidents involving La Salle students this year. A student was shot in a drug deal gone bad in North Fairmount in February.
