Miami University and the Myaamia (Miami) Nation are expanding their relationship.

Myaamia (pronounced me-AHM-ee-uh) Chief Doug Lankford and Miami University President Greg Crawford on Saturday are signing a collaborative agreement to increase awareness about the connection between the tribe and the school "which spans 45 years and is rooted in common geographic, historic, educational and cultural interests."

To kick off the new campaign, tribe member Julie Olds created a Myaamia Heritage Logo.

She says the inspiration comes from the nation's traditional ribbonwork. The red circle at the center symbolizes the partnership's fire and warmth, along with the shared responsibility of cultivating the relationship.

"It's something that has to be tended, something that gives off light, gives off warmth… but if you don't take care of it, it will go out," Olds says.
