ABC turns back the clock this fall with a reboot of The Wonder Years featuring a Black family in 1960s Montgomery, Ala., and with Queens, the reunion of a fictional 1990's hip-hop group.
Don Cheadle narrates The Wonder Years as Dean Williams, looking back on his middle-class life as a 12-year-old (played by Elisha "EJ" Williams) with his father (Dule Hill), mother (Saycon Sengbloh) and older sister (Laura Karniki). Fred Savage, star of the original 1988-93 ABC series, is an executive producer along with Lee Daniels (Empire, ABC's new Our Kind Of People) and Mark Valez. The Wonder Years will follow The Goldbergs, a nostalgic sitcom set in the 1980s.
Eve, Brandy, Naturi Naughton and Nadine Velazquez star as ABC's Queens, four women in their 40s who get their 1990s Nasty Bitches hip-hop group back together. The cast will perform original music on the Tuesday night drama.
ABC goes back to the 1950s for its midseason drama, Women of the Movement, about Mamie Till-Mobley's lifelong quest for justice after the 1955 murder of her son, Emmett Till. Adrienne Warren (Quanitco, Blue Bloods) stars as the activist who ignited "the Civil Rights movement as we know it today," ABC says.
ABC canceled Call Your Mother, Rebel, American Housewife, For Life and Mixed-ish. The network also says that Black-ish, returning at midseason, will end after eight seasons next year. Two comedies also will debut later in the season: Maggie, about a psychic, and Abbott Elementary, a workplace sitcom set in a Philadelphia grade school.
American Idol also returns next year.
