Several communities and counties are ready to help find a home for Christmas trees that have outlived their usefulness.
Three recycling sites open Saturday. They'll accept trees and other holiday greenery.
According to Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District, sites will be open to receive holiday greenery between Saturday, January 2 and January 9, 2016, from noon–3:00 p.m.
East: Bzak Landscaping – 3295 Turpin Lane (off Rt. 32),
(Bzak Landscaping is also open January 4-8, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm in addition to the Saturday hours.)
West: Kuliga Park – 6717 Bridgetown Road, Green Township
North: Rumpke Landfill – Struble Road and Colerain Avenue, Colerain Township
Before dropping off your greenery or Christmas tree, please remove ornaments, tinsel, tree bags, etc. Brush and tree branches must be cut into lengths of 4 feet or less and must be no larger than 12 inches in diameter. Brush and tree branches must be bundled. Bundles must not be heavier than 50 pounds. Yard trimmings must be brought to locations in containers or bags – brown paper bags preferred. Containers and plastic bags will be returned. Yard trimmings in commercial vehicles or from commercial establishments cannot be accepted. No large trailers or trucks larger than pickups. No pallets, boards, nails, fence, or wire accepted. No bricks, stones, or soil accepted. All children must stay inside vehicles. This free recycling is for Hamilton County residents only.
The Department of Public Improvements Urban Forestry Division and Rumpke have two options for recycling: Residents can put a tree by the curb for pick-up, or drop it off at one of two locations. Curbside pick-up will happen from January 4 through 18. But residents must call 1-877-786-7537 or e-mail Covington@rumpke.com 48 hours in advance. Pick-up will happen on the same day as regular trash collection.
There are also two drop-off locations for Covington residents. Through January 18, trees can be left at the Hands Pike Park parking lot at Tripoli Lane and Hands Pike, or at the Devou Park Urban Forestry Garage at 1700 Montague Road.
Rules for trees are similar to those in Hamilton County: no lights or decorations on the trees, and trees should not be in plastic bags. The trees will be turned into mulch for Covington’s Urban Forestry Division and offered to residents for free.
In Clermont County, trees are not only turned into mulch, but some are placed in lakes and ponds as fish habitat, or are used for beachfront erosion or shoreline stabilization projects, according to the Office of Environmental Quality.
Amelia: Curbside pick-up is available on Mondays during regular yard waste pick-up.
