Cincinnati’s Public Services Department is about to get tough on those residents who put out “improperly prepared” trash for pick-up.

Before this Sunday, sanitation workers will pick up improperly prepared trash but hang an orange tag on the empty containers to make residents aware of the violation. No citations or fines will be given.

For the two weeks following this Sunday, sanitation workers will start hanging orange tags on garbage cans that are not set out properly according to city policy. But the trash will only be collected if the resident corrects the violations and calls 591-6000.

After June 1, though, the Public Services Department will start getting tough. Sanitation workers will place new tags on improperly prepared trash requesting  residents to call 591-6000 for pick-up after the violation has been corrected.

And, after June 1, violators will receive a citation which could come with a fine – ranging from $50 for using the wrong kind of garbage container or up to $2,000 for improperly putting out construction debris.

Details on what constitutes “improperly prepared” garbage and the city’s guidelines on waste pick-up can be found here.

“These changes are necessary to help make sure our Department of Public Services team can best spend their time serving the community,’’ City Manager Harry Black said in a press release. “Cincinnati is a beautiful place and it will take everyone in the community doing their part to make sure it stays that way.”

City residents can get an additional trash cart by calling 591-6000.
