Cincinnati voters approve longer Council term

Tana Weingartner

Cincinnati voters Tuesday narrowly approved a charter amendment that will change city council members

terms in office from the current two-years to four.

The change will take effect with the Council election in 2013 and all nine members will be on the ballot at the same time.

Supporters say it will allow for Council to get more done and to spend more time working on larger issues like sharing services with Hamilton County.

Opponents say the longer term will allow council members to do unpopular things knowing they won't have to face voters for four years.

Terms limits will still be in place meaning council members will still only be able to serve for a total of eight years.
