Cincinnati Council is asking city administrators to move forward with a study of traffic signal timing in Downtown and Over-the-Rhine.
Supporters like Yvette Simpson said the proposal will benefit everyone. "To make sure all modes of transportation get through Downtown faster; buses, which are used by people who traditionally don't have vehicles and have to get to work faster, cars and streetcars," Simpson said.
The study could cost $300,000 and leftover streetcar construction money would be used to pay for it.
Mayor John Cranley is opposed to the plan. "Now we're going to go hire some high-priced consultants to study the traffic lights and the original intent of the motion was to give the streetcar priority over commuters coming into Downtown," Cranley said. "I think it's a big waste of money."
The Federal Transit Administration would have to approve the spending and council also would have to provide the money in an ordinance.
