A Do-Over For Gateway

Gateway's Facebook page

UPDATE 09/01/15: In a meeting described as low-key, The Gateway Community and Technical College Board of Directors approved the evaluation of President Ed Hughes and sent it to KCTCS President Jay Box.

ORIGINAL POST: The Gateway Community & Technical CollegeBoard of Directors will try again Tuesday to evaluate President Ed Hughes.

The Kentucky Community and Technical College System(KCTCS) President scolded the board for how it handled a similar meeting last month and sent materials submitted by members back without opening them. The agency's attorney said not following proper procedure could open up board members to lawsuits.

The agency also says the college didn't follow proper procedure during the meeting when it allowed public comment on the firing of a popular instructor. Some of the comments were from angry students who complained about the firing. Others wanted more communication from President Hughes.

Gateway Chairman of the Board Jeff Groob, who allowed the comments, said in an email to WVXU about Tuesday's upcoming meeting, "The Gateway Board intends to fully comply with the requirements of KCTCS with regard to the president’s evaluation."

KCTCS spokeswoman Terri Giltner explained what the Gateway Board of Directors will do this time. "An evaluation committee will submit a report that summarizes the evaluation of Dr. Hughes and then the board chair will entertain a motion to accept the report and then see if there is any discussion with any revisions that need to be made on it and then they will vote on approving that."

A meeting is set for noon Tuesday at the college's urban campus in Covington.
