September 5 - 11 is National Suicide Prevention Week. A federal study shows the number of suicides in the United States has surged 24% since 1999 and is now at the highest levels in almost 30 years.
More than 40,000 people each year in the U.S. take their own lives. Most individuals considering suicide give warning signs of their intentions. The best way to prevent suicide is to recognize these warning signals and know how to properly respond to them.
Joining us to discuss suicide and how to prevent it are Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Director of Psychiatric Consultation services for UC Health, Dr. Cheryl McCullumsmith; and Assistant Professor in the UC College of Allied Health Sciences - School of Social Work, Dr. Jennifer Wright-Berryman.
