Kentucky 49th in bike friendliness

A national bicycling-advocacy group says Kentucky ranks 49th among the 50 states in "bike friendliness."

The League of American Bicyclists’ annual report ranks states on criteria such as policy, legal and safety protections and roadway infrastructure.

Kentucky ranked 49th with recommendations to adopt new policies and infrastructure.

But, state Pedestrian and Bicycle Coordinator Troy Hearn disagrees with the report’s methodology saying it’s based on opinion surveys from privately-funded groups and not state or objective data.

"It’s just based on criteria they develop themselves," Hearn says. "Of course, I see it from the inside. I’ve seen more infrastructure development, more data-driven policies as to why, where and what the policies would be."

Ohio ranked 16th and Indiana 37th.
