Remembering Marcus Fiesel 10 Years Later

It's been ten years since a three-year-old boy from Butler County was murdered by his foster parents. Hundreds searched for Marcus Fiesel in August 2006, only to find out he'd been tied up, left in a hot closet for several days, and his remains then burned.

Butler County Children Services is planning a remembrance ceremony Friday morning.

In a statement, the agency says the goal is to remember Fiesel's death and reflect on changes to county's foster system.

The event is at 9 a.m. at the Government Services Building in Hamilton.

August 2006

On Aug. 4, Foster parents Liz and David Carroll and a live-in girlfriend Amy Baker left Fiesel tied up in a closet in their Clermont County home while attending a weekend-long reunion in Kentucky. When they returned and found the boy dead, David Carroll and Baker burned his remains in a chimney in a rural part of Brown County, throwing what didn't burn into the Ohio River.

Liz Carroll waited two weeks and then reported the boy missing, leading to a large-scale hunt.

Baker soon turned on the Carrolls.  A jury found Liz Carroll guilty in the case, and following her conviction David Carroll took a plea deal with prosecutors.  They both remain in jail.

The circumstances around Fiesel's death led to reforms at Butler County Children Services (Fiesel was from Middletown) and at the state level.
