Nurses have long been in the front lines of health care, and with millions more people having access to medical care after passage of the Affordable Care Act, the demand for qualified nurses is increasing dramatically. There is also continued need for nurse practitioners, who are taking on more and more responsibilities as primary care providers. Here to take a look at the changing role of nurses and nurse practitioners are Dr. Karen Bankston, associate dean of clinical practice at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing; Pat Adkins, director of Clinical Services, Long-Term Acute Care, at the Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care; and Kimberly Harrell, a nurse in the medical surgical intensive care unit at Good Samaritan Hospital who is now studying to be a nurse practitioner.
