World's Largest LEGO Exhibit Coming To Cincinnati

Aug 6, 2015

If you've been wondering why a bunch of giant LEGO bricks have been popping up around town and in your social media feeds, we finally have the answer. It was a promotion for the Cincinnati Museum Center's newest exhibit: The Art of the Brick.

The exhibit opens Oct. 23 and features more than 100 pieces of art created entirely out of LEGO bricks. Artist Nathan Sawaya's works include original designs along with adaptations of famous pieces such as the Mona Lisa by Da Vinci and Starry Night by Van Gogh. For the adventure seeker, there's a 20-foot long T-Rex skeleton.

There's also a multi-media collection involving photography. In a release, the Museum Center describes it as a "collection of LEGO brick infused hyper-realistic photography produced in collaboration with award-winning photographer Dean West."

According to the Museum Center, this is the first major museum exhibit created entirely out of LEGO bricks.

In the release Sawaya's work is described this way:

Sawaya transforms them into tremendous and thought-provoking sculptures, elevating the toy to the realm of art. Sawaya’s ability to transform this common toy into something meaningful, his devotion to spatial perfection and the way he conceptualizes action, enables him to elevate what almost every child has played with into the status of contemporary art.

On his website, the artist himself says he created the exhibit in 2007 with a goal of elevating "this simple plaything to a place it has never been before."

The exhibit will run through May 8.
