After Democrats won control of the U.S. House of Representatives on Election Day and made small gains in the Kentucky General Assembly, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he's "not happy" with how Republicans performed in suburban areas.

WVXU politics reporter Howard Wilkinson spoke with city hall reporter Jay Hanselman this morning about the results of of last Tuesday's election in Hamilton County. One thing was obvious: Hamilton is now a blue county. Every Democratic statewide candidate - for governor, secretary of state, attorney general, treasuer and auditor - lost statewide, but every one of them won Hamilton County by a sizeable margin. Democrats defeated several incumbent Republican judges.

The midterms were all about President Donald Trump. The Democrats gained control of the house and the Republicans kept control of the senate, with a record number of women elected to congress. But overall, election results were a mixed bag for both parties. Several races are still undecided, including those for Florida governor and senator, which may be headed for recounts.

In an election with the highest voter turnout for a midterm in Ohio since 1994, Democrats win two seats on the state's supreme court while Republicans sweep all statewide non-judicial office races. Ohio voters overwhelmingly reject Issue 1, which would have changed the state's drug laws.

While Democrats saw big wins in other Midwest states, they were shut out of their statewide executive races in Ohio. Strategists say Ohio is one step closer to losing its swing state status.

This week’s election underscored some weaknesses for Ohio Democrats. The party’s candidates lost all of the statewide executive offices and gained seats but also lost some in the state House and Senate. This has left many wondering where Democrats in Ohio go from here.

Chris Monzel says he wants to return to public service someday, but first, he has some projects that need finishing around the house. Monzel lost his seat on the Hamilton County commission to Democratic challenger Stephanie Summerow Dumas by about 8,400 votes in Tuesday's general election.

Sixth District GOP Congressman Andy Barr held off a challenge by first time candidate Amy McGrath, a retired Marine fighter pilot. The three-term U.S. Representative admits divisiveness in politics needs attention.

“We are a people, who rose from the rugged pioneer spirit which built this country. And there is no reason why Kentuckians can't lead a political and spiritual renewal to go along with our nation’s economic revival,” Barr said.

Barr thanked McGrath for stiff competition, saying it made him a better leader and better Congressman. For her part, McGrath promised to remain an active voice in Kentucky.

Her party recaptured the House Tuesday and Pelosi plans to seek another term as speaker of the House. But Democrats will need to bridge the demands of progressives and moderates.

In an extraordinarily combative news conference Wednesday after voters delivered him a rebuke by giving control of the House to Democrats, President Trump went after Republicans, Democrats and the media.

He mocked Republican candidates who distanced themselves from him, chided a reporter for asking a "racist question" and walked away from the lectern at one point, as an aide tried to wrest a microphone out of a reporter's hands.

Democratic challenger Stephanie Summerow Dumas won the race for Hamilton County commission by about 9,000 votes in Tuesday's election. Her victory means Democrats hold all three seats of the commission for the first time. It's also the first time there have been two women on the board. And Dumas says she is the first African-American woman to be elected commissioner in Ohio.

Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk whose refusal to sign marriage certificates for same-sex couples grabbed national headlines in 2015, has lost her bid for re-election to the Rowan County clerkship. The Republican lost to Democrat Elwood Caudill Jr., 54 percent to 46 percent.

With all 19 precincts reporting, preliminary results show Caudill earned 4,210 votes to Davis' 3,566.

Voters all over Hamilton County Some experienced confusion and frustration at the polls after scanner machines began spitting their ballots back out at them Tuesday morning.

And it was all due to a feature on the machine that the Board of Elections has had for several years before but never used in an election, Hamilton County Board of Elections chairman Tim Burke told WVXU.

"The scanners were spitting out ballots that were under-voted and the poll workers had never been trained on what to do about that,'' Burke said. "This should never have happened and it happened in every corner of  the county."
