The Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio is looking after senior citizens during the coronavirus outbreak. President and CEO Suzanne Burke said her agency has been planning for this since late January.

Following other organizations in looking for healthy volunteers to meet demand, Meals on Wheels says it's ordering food supplies and needs help with deliveries.

Long-term care provides help to individuals when they are not able to perform basic daily activities such as preparing food, dressing, bathing, or managing medications by themselves. According to LongTermCare.gov, 70-percent of people turning age 65 can expect to use some form of long-term care in their lifetime.

Elder abuse is a problem that affects hundreds of thousands of elderly individuals in the form of physical, sexual, psychological, financial abuse, exploitation and neglect. To help protect the elderly in Kentucky, last November then-Governor Steve Beshear signed an emergency regulation, effective as of the first of this year, requiring 1,300 health care providers for the elderly to obtain national background checks for new employees.
