Why Presidents Love Visiting Lima, Ohio

Mar 21, 2019

President Trump is in Ohio on Wednesday to tour the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, also known as the Lima Tank Plant. He'll also stop through Canton to fundraise for his 2020 re-election campaign.

President Trump continues to pile on criticism of the late Sen. John McCain, complaining on Wednesday during a speech in Ohio that the Arizona senator's family never thanked him for the Vietnam War hero's funeral, which involved large ceremonies in Washington, D.C.

"I gave him the kind of funeral that he wanted, which as president I had to approve," Trump told a crowd at an Army tank manufacturing plant in Lima. "I don't care about this. I didn't get [a] thank you. That's OK. We sent him on the way, but I wasn't a fan of John McCain."

Speaking on the Senate floor Thursday, Ohio's Republican Senator Rob Portman said he would "vote to support the disapproval resolution before us" regarding President Donald Trump's emergency declaration for a border wall, while still maintaining he supports the president's overall plan. Soon after, the Senate overturned Trump's declaration by a 59-41 vote.

Columbus Police have concluded their internal investigation into the 2018 arrest of Stormy Daniels at a Columbus strip club, which the department calls “improper” but not pre-planned or politically motivated.

We've all seen the press corps shouting questions to President Donald Trump on the White House south lawn, before boarding a helicopter taking him to Air Force One.

How does a reporter get his attention? That's one of the many stories shared by Steve Herman, White House bureau chief for the Voice of America, when he visited the National VOA Museum of Broadcasting in West Chester Township Wednesday.

The parents of Otto Warmbier issued a statement Friday in response to President Donald Trump's defense of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the alleged treatment of their son while in North Korea's custody.

Senator Rob Portman said he is undecided on how he will vote on the proposal to reject President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to fund a border wall.

Portman agrees immigration, trafficking and drugs are creating a crisis at the border, but he wants to know where funding for the president’s priorities will come from.

Calling it "a great thing to do," President Trump declared a national emergency on Friday in order to help finance a long-promised wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. It's a highly unusual move from an unconventional president.

Ordinarily, a U.S. senator endorsing the president of his own party for re-election would be nothing out of the ordinary.

That's what you would expect the senator to do, right? Under ordinary circumstances, that is.

President Trump is delivering a State of the Union address after a delay due to the government shutdown. Watch his speech live, followed by a Democratic response delivered by former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams.

When U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer was growing up in Ashtabula, Ohio, in the 1950s, it was a thriving factory town with a busy port where freighters brought iron ore to be used in the steel mills of Pennsylvania.

Today, many of the biggest factories have long since left the region for low-wage places — taking a lot of jobs with them — and the port ships a fraction of the freight it once did.

The longest government shutdown in history ended after President Trump signed a bipartisan three-week stopgap funding measure late Friday. Several agencies had been partially shuttered for 35 days.

"I am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government," Trump said earlier Friday in the White House Rose Garden, announcing the long-awaited bipartisan breakthrough.

WVXU politics reporter Howard Wilkinson spoke with News Director Maryanne Zeleznik today about Sen. Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, who is becoming very outspoken about his displeasure with President Trump. Will he replace Ohio's John Kasich as the most high profile GOP Trump critic?

Presents were exchanged, carols were sung, and the political news cycle kept on churning over the Christmas holiday.

The time surrounding Christmas and New Year's Day saw the partial government shutdown begin, the stock market take a tumble (then recover), and President Trump make a secret holiday visit to U.S. troops stationed in Iraq.

The midterms were all about President Donald Trump. The Democrats gained control of the house and the Republicans kept control of the senate, with a record number of women elected to congress. But overall, election results were a mixed bag for both parties. Several races are still undecided, including those for Florida governor and senator, which may be headed for recounts.
