Happy 86th birthday to Nick Clooney, the generous Cincinnati broadcasting icon, born on Jan. 13, 1934, in Maysville, Ky.

Clooney likes to joke that most of his life he's been known as George Clooney's father or singer Rosemary Clooney's baby brother.

Yes, it's true: All the visits to Middletown by Oscar-winning director Ron Howard were to scope out locations for his Hillbilly Elegy movie based on J.D. Vance's memoir of growing up among working-class "hillbillies" in the Butler County steel town.

But only a fraction of the film will be shot in Ohio, unless things change, says Ami Vitori, a Middletown City Council member and a Middletown Visitors Bureau board member.

On this date in history, Rosemary Clooney – arguably the most popular female vocalist from this area (although Doris Day fans may quibble) –  was born 90 years ago in Maysville, KY, on May 23, 1928.

David Letterman "had a wonderful time" in Augusta, Ky., during his trip to interview Nick and Nina Clooney about their famous son," Nick Clooney tells the Maysville Independent-Ledger.

"He even took a ride on the Augusta ferry," Nick Clooney said.

Nick Clooney stopped pacing the hallway in his Augusta home on Tuesday, after he and wife Nina saw their newborn grandchildren, Ella and Alexander Clooney, via Skype.

"They Skyped two hours after the babies were born -- George and Amal with the babies. We got to see them," said Nick Clooney, 83, by phone from Augusta.

Congratulations to George and Amal Clooney!

"This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine.  George is sedated and should recover in a few days," said the couple in a statement Tuesday, according to People magazine.

The late Miguel Ferrer's final appearance as Assistant Director Owen Granger airs on CBS' "NCIS: Los Angeles" 9 p.m. Sunday Feb. 19 (Channel 12).

Ferrer, son of singer Rosemary Clooney and cousin of actor George Clooney, died of throat cancer on Jan. 19. He was 61.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary this year, nonprofit Film Cincinnati (formerly the film commission) is seeking 30 donors willing to give $30,000 each.

"Most people think that we get paid to produce films here. (Not true!) Film Cincinnati is completely reliant on generous donations from our sponsors and people like you to sustain economic development and job creation in Greater Cincinnati," says a post on the FilmCincinnati website.

"He was not an old man, and he never was," said George Clooney about his cousin Miguel Ferrer at a memorial ceremony at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles Saturday.

George Clooney praised his cousin Miggy's perpetually youthful outlook on life, saying that "he came in like a comet, he rocketed through life and he got out," according to the Hollywood Reporter.

CBS Televisoin

To most of the world, Miguel Ferrer was a character actor best known for "NCIS: Los Angeles," "Crossing Jordan" or uptight FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield on ABC's "Twin Peaks."

But around here Miguel Ferrer – who died of cancer Thursday at age 61 -- was known as Rosemary Clooney's son and George Clooney's cousin.

To me, he was the guy who urged his fun-loving cousin George to pursue acting.  And the drum-playing son who toured the U.S. and Europe with his mother Rosemary and singer Bing Crosby before Bing's death in 1977.

NBCUniversal

Just two years after moving to Hollywood, George Clooney made his national TV debut on this date in CBS' short-lived "E/R" hospital comedy starring Elliott Gould, Conchatta Ferrell and unknown Jason Alexander on Dec. 12, 1984.

Make that four major Hollywood movie productions in town, and many more on the way, said Film Cincinnati executive director Kristen Schlotman on WVXU's "Cincinnati Edition" Monday.

Brothers Diego and Julio Hallivis have started filming their sci-fi thriller "Curvature" in Fort Thomas, says Fort Thomas Matters

I'd been hearing about the film for weeks, but producer Julio Hallivis kept putting me off – I'm guessing to break the news in Fort Thomas first.

Universal Pictures

Why does George Clooney want to quit acting? Because he loves directing, as he’s told me several times. And because he doesn’t want to look old on camera.

Clooney made headlines this week when media outlets picked up his Tuesday interview promoting “Hail Caesar!” at the BBC in London.

“It a very unforgiving thing with cameras, so aging is something you try to do less and less of on the screen. You try to pick the films that work best for you as you age,” said Clooney, who turns 55 on May 6.

NBC

Ten years before NBC’s hit “ER,” young unknown George Clooney did a CBS sitcom called “E/R” in 1984 with Elliott Gould, Conchatta Ferrell and another young, unknown actor named Jason Alexander.

The future George Costanza played hospital administrator Harold Stickley. Clooney was Ace, an inexperienced EMT. Clooney was 23; Alexander was 25.

Did the cast think Clooney was bound for greatness? That’s the question I asked Alexander during my interview in advance of his performances with the Cincinnati Pops March 4-6 at Music Hall. The entire interview airs 7 p.m. Sunday on WVXU-FM’s “Around Cincinnati.”

George Clooney started shooting “The Ides of March” in Northside 5 years ago today, Feb. 10, 2011, jump starting Cincinnati’s current movie renaissance nearly 25 years after “Rain Man” filming here.

Clooney directed and starred in the political thriller about dirty politics during a Pennsylvania governor’s (Clooney) campaign for president in the Ohio primary.  The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 2012 for best adapted screenplay with business partner Grant Heslov and playwright Beau Willimon.

The first day of shooting was a family affair.
