From America Abroad: Seven years into a brutal civil war in Syria, we are reminded how fragile states can lead to regional instability, cause humanitarian crises and fall prey to extremist organizations, such as ISIS.

Retiring after more than 35 years on public radio, Diane Rehm will host her last live edition of The Diane Rehm Show this Friday.

Joshua Johnson reached into his experience at the Miami Herald for the title of his new NPR show, "A1," which will replace the "Diane Rehm Show" on Jan. 2.

Rehm, 80, who retires at the end of the year, introduced Johnson as her successor Wednesday.
