WCPO-TV News Director Leaving In March

Make it four for four. When WCPO-TV News Director Alex Bongiorno announced Tuesday she was leaving Channel 9 in early March, she'll be the fourth of the four TV newsroom bosses here to step down in eight months.

With changes at Channels 5, 12 and 19 since July, Bongiorno is the longest-tenured current local TV news director, at 2-1/2 years. She was hired in July 2013, three months after Scripps executive Jeff Brogan was named WCPO-TV general manager.

WKRC-TV Hires Tim Geraghty As News Director

Tim Geraghty, whose experience as a TV news director reaches from Florida to California, starts Monday as news director at WKRC-TV (Channel 12).

Geraghty had been senior director for news at Central Florida News 13, a 24-hour news operation covering seven counties. He left that position in January after three years, according to Rick Gevers’ weekly TV news talent newsletter.

He replaces Kirk Varner, who left the Sinclair Broadcast Group’s CBS affiliate here on July 3.

WLWT-TV in second place for news at 11 p.m.? WCPO-TV tied with longtime news leader WKRC-TV at 6 p.m.? Will these May household rating trends continue in July sweeps starting today?

Sure, the four week July Nielsen ratings (today through July 29) are the least important of the sweeps months. But TV managers and advertisers will be watching closely to see if our viewing habits continue the shift revealed in May.

Catching Up To Cincinnati TV Changes

Before the July ratings sweeps start tomorrow, here’s an update on the changes at TV stations since the first of the year:

WKRC-TV: The biggest news by far is that Channel 12, first in the news ratings for years, is changing news directors. Kirk Varner’s last day is Friday. I can’t remember a TV station letting the news director go  during a sweeps month.
