Samuel Hannaford: Cincinnati’s Greatest Architect

Samuel Hannaford: Cincinnati’s Greatest Architect

Since 1877 Music Hall, designed by Samuel Hannaford (1835-1911), has been the grandest jewel in the Queen City’s crown. It is the architect’s “Mona Lisa.” And his “mini-masterpieces” are the focus of this class. A VPC class reviews his life and works, followed by exterior visits by car to Hannaford’s St. George Church (1873) and the Cox Mansion (1894), both in Clifton. Then not-far-away, Whitfield Avenue awaits. Ken Hughes of the Cincinnati Preservation Association will join us to share his knowledge about this enclave of Hannaford-designed residences. Then down to “lower Clifton” or as our final destination is called: Winton Place. The Methodist Church (1884) where Hannaford worshiped, and his nearby home (1865) will be explored both inside and out. Ken will share rare photographs about Hannaford from the CPA collection while we enjoy the mansion with insights from its owner. You will enjoy unique mantels, a cathedral-like bedroom and other sophisticated touches testifying to Hannaford’s reputation. Hannaford is buried right across the street from his home. His grave in Spring Grove Cemetery has no marker. Why? All to be explained by the chatelaine/guardian of the Hannaford residence during our visit. Incomparable Cincinnati! Not many cities can boast the likes of Samuel Hannaford. And amazingly, his many still-standing works including his church and home, over a century after the architect’s death, bring this giant back to life. Syllabus and directions will be handed out at the class. (Note. The sites will be visited by auto and involve little walking.)
