Musical Oratory of Lent - Buxtehude, 'Membra Jesu nostri'

Musical Oratory of Lent - Buxtehude, 'Membra Jesu nostri'

Sponsored by the Anerio Institute, the Oratory Singers & members of the Old St. Mary's Parish Orchestra will be performing the cantata cycle, 'Membra Jesu nostri patientis sanctissima', (The Most Holy Limbs of Our Suffering Jesus) written by the Danish Baroque composer and organist Dieterich Buxtehude (d. 1707), who was a major influence on the music of J.S. Bach. Setting large portions of the medieval Latin poem that, excerpted and in translation, would become the beloved hymn, 'O Sacred Head Surrounded,' Buxtehude uses each cantata to focus the listener's prayerful meditation on a different part of the crucified Christ, from the nail-pierced feet to the head crowned with thorns. Presented in a devotional, but not liturgical, context, this will be a perfect opportunity for believer and non-believer alike to enjoy and be enriched this Lent by a profoundly beautiful piece of music that expresses and responds to the depth and meaning of love found in the account of Christ's Passion & death. The effect of the music will be enhanced by the stunning beauty of Old St. Mary's Church, the oldest standing house of worship in Cincinnati still in use. There will also be moments for congregational singing, accompanied by Old St. Mary's majestic 39-rank Austin organ. There is no cost for admission, although freewill donations will be gratefully accepted. Free parking is available in the church lots, and an attendant will be in place to assist you if there are problems or questions about parking. The program will last about an hour.
